Hi guys,
So after much debating, the second anime that I’ve decided to cover for the Summer 2020 anime season, is Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha or The Misfit of Demon King Academy.
Episode Recap
The Misfit of Demon King Academy starts off with very simply.
Anos Voldigord (CV:
Tatsuhisa Suzuki) arrives on the first day of the academy’s entrance exams and strikes up a friendship with
Misha Necron (CV:
Tomori Kusunoki). Waving goodbye to their parents and guardian, the pair enter the school and bump into
Zepes Indu (CV:
Takuya Eguchi), a duke from the noble Indu family. Zepes tries to intimidate the pair. But Anos easily gets the upper hand and teaches Zepes a lesson by making him submit to him.
Inside the school, Anos enters the examination room where an owl fills him in on the details of the entrance exams. Unfortunately, Anos gets partnered with Zepes for the practical skills exam which is a duel. At the arena, Anos proceeds to thoroughly trounce Zepes by repeatedly killing and resurrecting him; much to the shock and horror of the older students. Having enough, Zepes surrenders and forfeits the match. After the match, the rest of the school day proceeds as normal with Anos and the rest of the new students undergoing the Magic Power assessment test and the aptitude test.
After the exams, Anos meets up with Misha and invites her over to his house for dinner. At Anos’ house, Anos introduces a surprised Misha to his very loving and friendly parents,
Gusta (CV:
Shinobu Matsumoto) and
Izabella (CV:
Aki Toyosaki) who tease Anos about his new wife over dinner. During dinner, Anos reveals that he aged himself up over the period of a month. After dinner, Anos escorts Misha home. Along the way, they are accosted by Zepes, his older brother,
Leorig Indu (CV:
Shinnosuke Tachibana) and their guards.
Angered by his brother’s defeat and constant bragging, Leorig kills his little brother. He then proceeds to challenge Anos to a duel. Angered by Leorig’s lack of respect for his own family, Anos turns Zepes into a zombie and coerces Leorig into fighting him together with his brother. However, Leorig refuses and the brothers kill each other. Anos though resurrects the pair and lectures them on the folly of their ways. Upset, Leorig asks who Anos is and Anos introduces himself as, ‘The True Demon King of Tyranny, Anos Voldigord.’
The next day at school, Anos enters his new classroom and greets his new classmates. Sitting down next to Misha, Misha informs Anos that there are rumors going around about him because of his badge. Meaning that he has been labelled as a ‘Misfit.’
Impressions
First off, Tatsuhisa Suzuki really does rock as Anos and boy is he overpowered. He can not only defeat a person within seconds, he can resurrect them too. He also manages to age himself in less than a month which is pretty surprising for a demon. Anos is also surprisingly Gilgamesh-level arrogant. However, he does have a kind heart and cares for others too. His pension for comedy on the other hand is lacking.
Anos’ parents definitely provide most of the comedy for his show. They are loving, warm and caring and I love how ballistic they go over Anos’ love life. Though I thought they’d be more weirded out by Anos’ rapid growth. Then, we have Misha. Misha is your typical shy quiet schoolgirl. I can’t really say much about her yet, other than I like her character and that she does appear to have some issues.
Regarding the show, there is a lot of desirable and appealing qualities about this anime. The animation is great, the opening theme song is incredible and most of the characters have likable designs including Misha. The transition and pacing is also fluid and not jittered. I also like how the show uses titles to tell its audience how much time has passed, rather than making you guess with vague transition scenes. The only thing that is lacking with the writing is the comedy. But, I will definitely recommend this show to everyone!
