That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime or Tensei Shitara Suraimu Datta Ken is the latest edition to the ever-growing list of fantasy light novel based Isekai anime playing this year. Created by Fuse, the original story follows Satoru Mikami (Takuma Terashima), a 37 year old salaryman who lives life at a slow pace and who has never had a girlfriend in his life. One day,  while hanging out with his friend, Tamura and his girlfriend, Miho, their group is suddenly attacked on the street by a slasher. As the slasher is about to attack his friend, Satoru pushes him out of the way and gets stabbed instead. As he lays there dying, Satoru hears a mysterious voice who registers his last thoughts and regrets over his inadvertent choices and upon waking up shockingly discovers that he has been reincarnated into a fantasy world as a slime with the special ability called “Predator” which allows him to devour, analyze and re-create any object. There the story follows his journey as he makes new comrades and adapts to his new body and life.

To be completely honest, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is gonna be one of those anime that you’ll either love or hate. It will definitely appeal to those who have already the series or love the Isekai genre, but not all anime fans will like it. The first episode of the anime was pretty much exposition and backstory into how Satoru became a slime, but the comedic aspects in the second half of the episode was pretty entertaining enough to make me to try it out for a little while longer. The animation created by studio 8-bit was pretty decent and the voice acting is pretty good, however, the animation could have been perhaps better. The opening theme song is also pretty good.

Character-wise, I say that Satoru is an appealing protagonist. His personality is likable and from what we saw of his human situation, it is relatable and he might get better as a main character as he develops over the course of more episodes. Compared to Tanya: Saga of Evil or How NOT to Summon A Demon Lord which I loved and are from the same Isekai genre, this production does feel a little lackluster. However, if you give it the three episode rule and find that you like it, then you’ll most likely enjoy the rest of the series. So, I suggest that even if you are not a fan of the manga or even if you are anime fans or even fans of the original light novels that you give this anime a go. It will prove to be an entertaining watch.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is airing on Mondays at 24:00 (JST) on channel ANIMAX , so please check it out!
